James & Ether King Funding Opportunities

James & Esther King Biomedical Research Program

New Investigator Research (NIR) Grants

The intent of this program is to foster development of new investigators so that they can undertake independent research that is competitive for national research funding. Projects must be conducted under the mentorship of a senior investigator. The Proposals must address an important biomedical, biotechnological, or social scientific research and development problem relevant to tobacco use or diseases related to tobacco use.

The maximum award for NIR grants is $135,000 for the first year, not to exceed $400,000 over 36-months. Awards are for a period of up to 36-months and will begin on or around July 1.

Team Science Program (TSP) Grants

The purpose of this grant program is to support a broadly based, multi-disciplinary research program with a well defined major objective or theme; create synergies and collaborations; stimulate applications to, and make Florida institutions competitive for, program-type federal or national extramural funding; address research questions that can only be accomplished through collaborations, networks, and consortia.

A TSP project generally involves the organized efforts of relatively large groups, members of which are conducting research projects designed to explain the various aspects or components of the overall objective. An eligible institution can submit up to two intra-institutional (single institution meeting the required match) Team Science Program grant application and an unlimited number of inter-institutional (involving more than one eligible institution contributing to the required match) Team Science Program grant applications.

The TSP project consists of at least three and no more than five interrelated individual research projects led by a Project Director. The individual research projects must be multi-disciplinary and at least one project must be translational in nature.

The maximum award for TSP grants is $500,000 for the first year, not to exceed $1,500,000 over 36-months. An institutional match of at least 25 percent of the grant direct cost amount is required. Awards are for a period of 36 months and will begin on or around July 1.

Research Project Grants (RPG)

The intent of this grant mechanism is to encourage research in two specific areas of diseases related to tobacco use: translational research and health disparities research. RPGs are for the conduct of research projects that are hypothesis driven. Research projects must be fully developed, scientifically rigorous, and include sound background information, hypotheses, and promising preliminary studies or supporting data.

The maximum award for RPGs is $300,000 for the first year, not to exceed $1,500,000 over 60-months. Awards are for a period of 60 months and will begin on or around July 1.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (PRF)

The intent of the PRF is to (a) attract junior scientists and researchers into careers addressing important questions about diseases related to tobacco use; and (b) provide support to promising postdoctoral researchers who have the potential to become productive and successful independent investigators in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and/or cure of diseases related to tobacco use such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and pulmonary disease.

The award amount includes a stipend and allowance and is dependent on the length of relevant research or clinical training since attaining doctoral degree. Awards are for a period of up to 36 months (depending on time since doctoral degree) and will begin on or around July 1. Specific award amount and duration requirements are available in the PRF Call for Grant Applications.

Technology Transfer/Commercialization Partnership (TTCP) Grants

The intent of the TTCP grant mechanism is to: encourage the collaboration of investigators at eligible institutions and small businesses; stimulate technology transfer activities for promising research discoveries that could lead to innovations in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, or cure of tobacco-related diseases; and strengthen a project’s economic feasibility and commercialization prospects.

The maximum award for TTCP grants is $100,000 over 12-months.

Note: The above grant mechanisms are offered in the FY 2010-2011 Calls for Grant Applications that was released on December 4, 2009.
